Pain and Addiction Medical School/Residency Training (2009-12-18)

Clinical Tools, Inc. is developing a new web-based educational and clinical skills training experience funded by NIDA (#1R44DA027245-01). A website on the interface of pain treatment and addiction will present a medical student curriculum on preventing drug misuse and addiction in chronic pain patients. It will include a new approach to the standardized patient clinical interview.

This survey is for respondents who recently completed their training and would like to provide input regarding a medical student/residency education on pain and addiction treatment. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Current medical students would benefit from more instruction on the interface of pain and addiction treatment.
Specifically, more education is needed on how to interview patients about prescription drug misuse, other substance use problems, and risk factors
Specifically, more education is needed on signs and symptoms of addiction
Specifically, more education is needed on how addiction is treated and how those treatments interact with opioids
Specifically, more education is needed on how pain is managed in patients with untreated addiction, in recovery, and in addiction treatment
I believe faculty would be open to using a Web-based curriculum to supplement teachings in the area of pain and addiction.
