Chad Wright

Case Overview: Chad Wright is complaining of possible kidney stones, which is causing him tremendous pain. Chad also has a previous knee injury. In the past 13 years since his injury, Chad has undergone surgery and extensive physical therapy to repair his knee. He has been prescribed various opioid pain medications with various effect, but for the past 3 years has been taking Percocet and that has relieved his pain. He has come to you for treatment of his possible kidney stones, as well as a refill on his Percocet.
Case Type: Skills Assessment
Learners should focus on investigative assessment technique, applying instruments, making a correct diagnosis, and formulating a treatment plan.
Target Audience: Medical students in their second through fourth years of study will benefit the most from this Standardized Patient encounter.
Goal:
Assessment Objectives: We will be able to document change in student performance of:

Identifying common warning signs and symptoms of addiction

Screening the patient with an appropriate screening tool

Providing a brief intervention for the patient and developing a treatment plan

Explaining treatment decisions with patients as part of informed consent procedures
Knowledge/Competence Objectives:
After meeting with the Standardized Patient (SP), the student will:

Assess the patient's symptoms

Assess the patient's knowledge of the danger of opioid abuse

Develop a plan to treat the symptoms of the SP that accounts for the risk of opioid abuse
Clinical Skill Objectives:
The student learner will be evaluated on the following clinical skill achievements:

Knowledge of addictive behaviors

Usage of screening tools to determine level of patient's addiction(s)

Sensitivity towards patient care

Proper diagnosis given
